The Cowboy Recreation and Nature Trail uses the railbanked Chicago & North Western railroad corridor running between Norfolk and Chadron. It was acquired in 1993 by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, which gave it to the state. The Game and Parks Commission was designated to develop and manage it as a trail. The 247-mile segment from Norfolk to Merriman is a conservation corridor with a trail. The remaining 74-mile stretch from Merriman to Chadron will be a "rail with trail," and the rail line will remain in place to allow a short-line railroad carrier to operate. An easement will accommodate a 30-foot-wide trail corridor parallel to the tracks. By the end of 2007, 195 miles of trail will be complete from Norfolk to Valentine.
