At Rock Creek Station State Historical Park the trail from the visitor center to the historic road ranches parallels the deep swale of the Oregon, California and Pony Express National Historic Trails. Approximately three-eights of a mile long (one way), this trail features a prairie plant and wildflower display and corresponds to a free guide available at the visitor center. The pathway starts as cement sidewalk, goes to wood chips and ends up as a buffalo grass surface. Horses are not allowed on this trail except to travel through the ranches. At the north edge of the East Ranch, a one-half mile loop through the timber along Rock Creek is often a great place for bird watching and observing native wildlife. Hikers, bikers and horse riders enjoy the four mile trail from "Horse Camp" to the historic ranches and around the back area of the park. This trail features grassy prairie hilltops and rugged ravines and follows the perimeter around the south end of Rock Creek Station. This shredded grass trail does have serveral short moderate inclines and declines, but is not very difficult. Horse camp consists of primitive restrooms, hydrants, picnic tables and grills or fire-rings. Camp fees are $8.00 per night and a Nebraska Park Entry Permit is required. Ask for a copy of our Horse Camp Regulations and Suggestions.
