Campground Hosts ProgramAre you an avid camper? Would you like to share your expertise with others and contribute to the enjoyment of your state park areas? If so, check out the Game and Parks Commission's Campground Host program. Nebraska Campground Hosts are volunteers, who serve without pay, to share their camping knowhow and love of the outdoors. They welcome visitors, acquaint them with park facilitics, and act as liaison with thc Commission's parks staff. It is an opportunity to develop some lasting friendships, while contributing to the betterment of Nebraska's park system. Hosts receive free camping, with electrical hookups, and, where available, use of the area's shower facilities. Not all Campground Host areas have showers. Hosts must supply their own camping equipment. What's Involved?Any individuals over age 18 may serve as Campground Hosts, if they are veteran campers and are willing to help others. Hosts set the example for other campers. They must be willing to spend a minimum of two weeks, with a maximum of four weeks, at one of thc campgrounds involved in the program. Other campers may accompany the Host, but the Commission asks that there be no more than six in the party. The program operates from May l through September 15, and Hosts may apply for any two to four-week period between those dates. Hosts are on duty only for two to four hours per day, five days a week, including weekends and holidays. However, they are on call at all times to assist in emergencies. In addition to acting as a good host and acquainting campers with local points of interest, pertinent parks regulations and park facilitics, volunteers may be requested to do some light maintenance chores. These might include some litter pickup, checking and stocking sanitary facilitics between regular stops by maintenance crews, changing light bulbs and the like. Hosts will NOT be involved in law enforcement. How to ApplyCampground hosts are choosen by the local park superintendants at each area that participates in the program. Selection is based on the needs at that area, an applicant's qualifications, his or her familiarity with camping in Nebraska parks and knowledge of the surrounding region. A personal interview may be required. Those selected as Hosts will be asked to sign an Agreement for Volunteer Services with the Commission. This agreement may be cancelled at any time. Orientation sessions are held for those selected as Hosts, and they are issued caps and official badges that identify them as Nebraska Campground Hosts.
