  Nongame Program

Nebraska is the crossroads of the United States - west meets east, north meets south. This position creates a

very unique and diverse landscape across the state. Support for Nebraska wildlife is provided from hunters, trappers, fishermen, federal grants, and state taxes. Nongame wildlife is supported solely through the nongame and endangered species fund. This fund accrues through the tax checkoff and donations from citizens. The nongame fund represents a very small amount compared to the funds for game species, yet nongame species comprise the vast majority of the diversity of Nebraska.

Nebraska Biodiversity:
Birds - 400 speciesOnly 35 of these are considered game species
Mammals - 95 speciesOnly 11 are hunted or trapped = 11%
Reptiles and Amphibians - 60+Ornate box turtle, Blandings turtle 
Fish - 80 speciesAlmost half of nongame species are threatened or endangered
Plants - 1470 speciesVast array of plant species
Insects - 10's of thousands5th highest butterfly diversity of any state
Endangered species27 on endangered and threatened lists
